When the Wheels Start Turning Again
For some three years in Mexico the employees of the Euzkadi tire factory in El Salto near Guadalajara were on strike against the illegal factory closure by the German company Continental. While the company directors in Hanover ignored the protest at first, the workers rallied international support to organize what’s seen as one of the most important union campaigns in recent years. They were successful too, because since 2007 tires have been coming off the assembly line again. The company is now being run as a co-operative, and production is organized by the workers.
